If we live in the Detroit suburbs, how can I work with you in Ann Arbor?
First, we will meet with you initially whenever and wherever it is convenient for you -- in your office, home or our office – for breakfast, lunch or after hours or on Saturdays. If you are going to be an on-going client, we normally want you to visit our offices at least once to see how we operate. However, we have clients who have never seen our offices. Larry has clients literally from coast to coast and traveled daily from Ann Arbor to the Detroit suburbs for 12 years. With phones, faxes, overnight delivery services, and our willingness to travel, we can handle your investment needs. We are licensed to work with clients in 12 states. Give us an example of the benefits a client may get from professional advice.
We have described in words in how you can benefit from our plans and advice. In a quantifiable sense, if we could help clients increase their returns, for example, on $1 million from 8% to 9%, this would mean their portfolio would be $5.6 million rather $4.6 million in 20 years. $1 million higher. What seems to be a small annual improvement represented a 20% increase in this example. What's a 20% increase on your portfolio worth? That's a pretty big impact, and it's certainly realistic to expect that many of you reading this web site will live another 20 years. Our experience working with new clients indicates that we can usually find a few flaws in a client's thinking about retirement and investing. This can lead to some pretty interesting improvements to a client's financial situation.
Can you tell us a little bit about how you've set up your business and how big you are?
Larry has been involved in providing financial advice to corporations and individuals for almost 20 years. We know what people want from their investment advisor. They want someone with broad experience in managing investments, someone with insight into the kind of investments that are likely to be successful and those that won't. And very importantly, they want someone who can be trusted to act in their best interest. In establishing our business, we did it in manner that would be free from as many conflicts of interest as possible. We are independent investment advisors; we are not employed by any money manager, bank, insurance company or full-service broker. We don't have to try to sell what stocks the home office has in inventory. We don't have to set up so many accounts per month or sell just what a parent company provides us.
Since our clients range from very conservative to moderately aggressive, we use a wide range of alternatives to meet very different needs. We want to pick the best mutual funds, stocks or bonds or comprehensive investment approaches like SEI Investments. We want to be independent and free to do what is best for the client. While that makes our life more complicated, clients can clearly benefit.
In some respects, we're in the peace of mind business. Many people don't have the time, interest, or experience to handle their investments on an on-going basis. Yet, they realize that building and maintaining a nestegg are vital to realizing their retirement dreams. We are constantly assessing the various financial markets. When we determine that changes are appropriate, we review client's accounts, call them with our recommendations and take action if approved. This helps some individuals sleep better at night because they know that their assets are being monitored professionally. This enables some individuals to feel as if they have shifted their investment worries from their shoulders to ours. Our job is to help our clients realize their retirement dreams, to simplify their lives, and to reduce their financial concerns.
